How do you overcome skepticism?
I have a theory about why people powering out Gloria Arroyo has become very difficult.
The first people power happened when people overcame their fear. For whatever reason, people, on thos fateful February days, decided enough was enough, bahala na.
The second people power happened easily and quickly because there was no fear and, because the first people power did make things better, people believed that it was the right thing to do again.
And this brings us to why it’s hard to people power Gloria. People saw what happened when they threw out Estrada and installed her. They saw that people power does not always result in positive change. That made them skeptical. And that’s why there is no enthusiasm for another one.
There was no pare-pareho lang sila during the first people power. There was none of that when people went to the streets against Erap. That happened only after Gloria replaced Erap.
At the end of the day, it’s easier to overcome fear than skepticism. Fear is finite. Intimidation only goes so far. But skepticism… how do you reintroduce hope to the cynical?

By not ever giving up? By always making the effort to be present in mass actions? And by personally keeping tab of at least 5 of the most skeptical of friends, and drowning them with e-mail — originals and forwarded material — to make them realize that cynicism just won’t bring change>
